Faculty and Staff Spotlight: Erin Carlton

Erin Carlton

Erin Carlton, MD, is a Clinical Associate Professor in Pediatric Critical Care at the University of Michigan and health services researcher at the Susan B. Meister Child Health Evaluation and Research (CHEAR) Center. Dr. Carlton’s research focuses on improving long-term outcomes after pediatric critical illness, including sepsis. She strives to understand the factors influencing pediatric critical illness and sepsis survivorship, with a goal of developing and testing clinical interventions to mitigate long-term morbidity. Additionally, her work aims to understand and mitigate the financial toxicity of pediatric critical illness.

Dr. Carlton serves as a panelist on the international Pediatric Surviving Sepsis Campaign Guidelines. She has received funding from AHRQ to measure the rate and impact of primary care follow-up after critical illness on subsequent emergency department use and rehospitalization and most recently was awarded an R03 from the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences to measure the impact of sepsis on chronic respiratory failure in children. Along with other CHEAR faculty, Drs. Kohne and Barbaro, Dr. Carlton is working to understand the ongoing challenges and needs of children hospitalized at the University of Michigan who survive critical illness and their families through the FOCI study (Following Outcomes after Critical Illness).
