  • CHEAR Seminar: Firearm Safety and Injury Prevention in Early Childhood: A Parent Engagement Approach
    9:00 am - 10:00 am

    Alison L. Miller, PhD
    Professor
Department of Health Behavior and Health Education
    School of Public Health
    University of Michigan

Dr. Miller is a developmental psychologist by training, and she has been a faculty member at UM's School of Public Health for 17 years.  She received her PhD in Developmental Psychology from UM in 2000 and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Psychiatry at Brown School of Medicine. Most of her work concerns young children who are growing up in poverty and/or who have experienced early life stress (also known as Adverse Childhood Experiences, or ACEs) or other social determinants such as poverty that can negatively impact health during childhood and across the lifespan. Her research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the USDA, the Administration for Children and Families, and the American Heart Association. A goal of her work is to apply a developmental science lens to designing, implementing, and evaluating prevention and intervention strategies for children and families. She has worked with community partners including pediatricians, community-based organizations, Head Start programs, and school systems, and UM colleagues across disciplines to translate research findings into intervention approaches that may ultimately reduce health inequities and foster positive health and well-being for children and families.

Dr. Miller will provide an overview of issues related to firearm injury prevention and safe storage in early childhood and describe a current CDC-funded study of hers in this area. The project takes a mental model’s approach to identifying gaps in parent and expert understanding of safe storage and firearm injury prevention during the early childhood years. Dr. Miller will present the background, rationale, and initial data from the newly funded SAFE ARMS study.
