"Despite the existence of treatments now that can reduce the risk of strokes and infection in people with sicklecell disease, gaps in care continue to persist, said Sarah Reeves, an assistant professor in the departments ofpediatrics and epidemiology at Michigan Medicine."

“When you merge a very complex, chronic condition to manage with being consistently underserved in healthcare historically, and currently — that really creates a difficult situation to receive high-quality care,” Reevessaid. “Access doesn’t just mean health insurance. It means there’s a provider you can go to.”
