Prevalence and Magnitude of Potential Surprise Bills for Childbirth
In this study, the authors analyzed almost 100,000 privately insured families with in-network births in 2019. Among these families, almost 1 in 5 received a potential surprise bill for out-of-network care. Among these families, the median liability for surprise bills was $744, and one-third of families paid more than $2,000. Surprise bills were more common when Cesarean section of neonatal intensive care occurred. Findings suggest that many families will benefit under the No Surprise Act, which will ban most surprise bills starting in January 2022.
