New publication: Risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality in young adults with end-stage renal disease: An analysis of the US renal data system

New research published in JAMA Cardiology from CHEAR Faculty Dr. Zubin Modi looks at the risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality in young adults with end-stage renal disease (ESRD).
Key points:
- Rates of cardiovascular mortality in young adults with incident end-stage renal disease were up to 500 times the general population in this study. 40% of the young adult deaths were due to cardiovascular causes.
- Hospitalization rates were higher for young adults than young children. Adolescent started with low hospitalization rates and those increased over time, converging with young adults.
- Optimization of pre-ESRD health care and improving preemptive transplant in this population may be ways to improve their cardiovascular outcomes.
- Young adults with ESRD have cardiovascular risk factors that differ from other groups, suggesting need for age-specific strategies to better address this population.
