Postdoctoral Fellowship in Valuing Health

We are seeking a postdoctoral scholar (or scholars) to contribute to projects that advance methods for valuing health in the context of economic evaluation. The fellowship is designed to provide training and research experience relevant to valuation of health, health interventions, and health decisions using methods of decision science and economic evaluation.  Postdoctoral fellows will collaborate on established projects (~50%) and will be encouraged to conduct independent research (~50%) relating to economic evaluation methods for valuing health with an emphasis on special populations including children, families, and older individuals. The fellowship experience will emphasize study design and implementation, manuscript writing, and grant applications.

This fellowship program is supported by the Valuation of Child Health Initiative (VoCHI) at the University of Michigan. Lisa Prosser, PhD, Principal Investigator of VoCHI, is the Marilyn Fisher Blanch Research Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Michigan Medical School and School of Public Health. Her research focuses on valuing child health and family well-being using methods of decision sciences and economics. Current research topics include newborn screening programs, vaccination programs, and methods for valuing family spillover effects of illness.

Eligibility

This fellowship is designed for applicants with doctoral-level training in public health, health policy, public policy, decision sciences, management science, economics, or related fields. All requirements of the PhD or equivalent terminal degree must be completed before the postdoctoral research fellow appointment can begin. Fellows are selected on the basis of previous academic or professional achievements and demonstrated interest in valuing health in special populations.

Appointment Terms

This is a 12-24 month fellowship with 2 open positions. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and education. Support is available for travel, coursework/data/other research needs, and professional development.

Research Environment

The fellowship is primarily based within the Susan B. Meister Child Health Evaluation and Research Center at the University of Michigan, also known as CHEAR. With 17 core research investigators and more than 40 research staff, fellows, and students, our center is one of the largest of its kind focused on children and their families. We conduct research and training in child health outcomes and health policy across several core research themes, such as data science, emerging technologies, outcomes research, policy, and communications. Our work is multidisciplinary, encompassing epidemiology, health policy, health services research, general pediatrics and pediatric subspecialties. Collaboration is essential to our work, and we have partners at more than 10 schools and colleges on campus and across multiple departments at the Medical School. Our research is funded by federal agencies (NIH, AHRQ, CDC, PCORI, HRSA), foundations, state government, and philanthropy. We are committed to being a policy resource, and to this end have a long history of collaboration with the State of Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to evaluate state public health programs and initiatives. Our fellows often collaborate with faculty and postdocs on other parts of campus including the School of Public Health and the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation, and receive support services for postdoctoral fellows available through the Rackham Graduate School.
