In a new JAMA Pediatrics Viewpoint, CHEAR Faculty Investigators Dr. Sarah Reeves & Dr. Gary Freed discuss the potentially substantial implications for quality measurement in the transition from reporting diagnoses in ICD-9-CM to ICD-10-CM codes that have previously been ignored.

"For quality measures to continue to be accurate and useful, significant resources need to be allocated to translate all quality measures between the coding systems (ICD-9 to ICD-10) and then assess the accuracy of each measure in the new coding system," says lead author Sarah L. Reeves, Ph.D. "Otherwise, the quality agenda in the US will be markedly compromised."
