Market Survey of Healthcare Provider Vaccine Purchasing Behavior
Faculty Contact: Sarah J Clark, MPH
The high cost to purchase vaccines has been identified as a barrier to offering vaccines in private health settings. There is little information about the extent to which immunization providers utilize mechanisms such as vaccine purchasing groups, or whether these mechanisms are successful in lowering purchase costs.
To describe the operations of vaccine purchasing groups; to examine immunization providers’ use of vaccine purchasing groups and the prices paid for vaccines.
Research Topics and Methods:
The project will involve several components:
- Interviews with vaccine purchasing groups
- Surveys of family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics-gynecology, and pediatric practices to collect data on vaccine purchases
- Analysis of per-dose purchase price, by specialty and by use of vaccine purchasing group
The project is funded by the National Vaccine Program Office, through a subcontract with Mathematica.
